After striking gold at the B.O. earlier this year, Sajid Nadiadwala’s Akshay Kumar- Kareena Kapoor starrer Kambakkht Ishq has added yet another feather to its cap. Hardly has the awards season begun and the film has bagged an award for ‘Best Locations’ at Locations’ 09 – the World’s first Film Tourism Annual Exhibition and Award function.

The award was presented to director Sabbir Khan at a function in Mumbai earlier this week. Elated at bagging this honour, Sabbir said, “I am very happy Kambakkht Ishq is continuing to bag laurels even months after its release, that the effort put in to exploit a location authentically and grandiosely has been appreciated and awarded. It was indeed an overwhelming experience collecting this award in front of many industry stalwarts.”

Kambakkht Ishq was among the few Bollywood films which was majorly shot at some prominent locations around LA and in Italy. The makers even shot at the world famous Kodak Theatre- home to the Academy awards each year.

Asin-Abhsihek

The lead pair of Ashutosh Gowariker’s next, ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’, which is based on the Chittagong Uprising, is finally in place. We had earlier reported that Abhishek Bachchan will play the lead role as Surjya Sen. Gowariker has now finalised Asin to play the female lead.

A source said, “This will be the first time that Abhishek and Asin will be paired opposite each other. The film’s first schedule will tentatively start around November 25.”

Apparently, the forthcoming film will be produced by Gowariker along with PVR Pictures and not UTV who had produced his last three films. Gowariker was unavailable for comment.

Lara Dutta

Nope. Lara Dutta is not in love! In the recent past, Lara Dutta went through two heartbreaks – fallout with Kelly Dorjee and then Dino Morea. But that doesn’t mean that the sexy lady has lost faith in love. Just that, lady Lara is enjoying her singledom and is in no hurry to fall in love.

Nevertheless, there’s a certain someone who she admits to have complete trust on. That special man in Lara’s life is none other than her ‘Blue’ co-star and dear friend Akshay Kumar.

Lara who will be seen doing dangerous underwater stunts admits that she wouldn’t have overcome her hydrophobia without Akshay’s help. “It’s not that I had no confidence. I was severely hydrophobic. But Akshay thinks that when it comes to action there are not many women who would be willing to do this. I didn’t know how to swim but Akki had a lot of faith in me,” she said.

She revealed that Akshay helped her perform dangerous stunts. “Akshay has always been motivating me, in terms of action or difficult scenes. He has been my greatest support. Also I think being the only girl I was thoroughly spoiled. I am a bit of tomboy, I love challenges and he knows when and where to push me.”

Lara can’t stop raving about Akshay who also happened to be her first costar. Lara reveals that she shares a great rapport with him in personal life too and when she needs neutral opinions about life, she trusts Akshay completely. “We share a great bond and he is my friend, philosopher and guide. If I need a piece of advice or have a doubt about something, he is the one person I know who can give me unbiased opinion.” She signs off.

Shah Rukh Khan along with wife Gauri will walk the ramp for friend Karan Johar while Salman Khan has roped in girlfriend Katrina and Aamir Khan to walk the ramp for his foundation ‘Being Human’. Aamir and Shah Rukh both being superstars it will be fun to see who gets better response on the ramp. Given Aamir’s attitude of keeping low profile, many believe it will be him who will gather more applause than Shah Rukh.

Deeepika Padukone and Lara Dutta are shooting for Sajid Khan’s “Housefull” at the moment and both believe they’ve the best role.

“The film has Deepika, Jiah (Khan) and me — three girls. But mine is a great role. It’s the strongest role among the females,” Lara told IANS.

So where does that leave Deepika who was recently seen in the hit movie “Love Aaj Kal”?

“Deepika is the main female romantic lead. She has most of the songs and romantic scenes with Akshay Kumar. Lara has a stronger role in terms of the dialogue and the comic sequences,” said a source.

“Housefull” is a comedy of errors apparently inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Chupke Chupke” about a house filled with characters coming and going and creating a commotion of mistaken identity.

A diehard Hrishi-da fan, Sajid, who had acted in the veteran director’s last film “Jhooth Bole Kawwa Kaate”, has given Akshay a role that echoes Dharmendra in “Chupke Chupke”.

And if Sajid is a diehard Hrishi-da fan, Akshay has been a lifelong Dharmendra fan.

So where does that leave the two leading ladies?

“Both believing that she has the best female role while Akshay has the best part by far,” said a source from the film.

Blue Team

Shree Ashtivinayak’s forthcoming film ‘Blue’ is all set to hit theatres this October. Though the song ‘Chiggy Wiggy’ is a delight to watch with the beautiful Kylie Minogue and hot hunk Akshay Kumar shaking a leg, what puts us off is Sanjay Dutt’s look in the film. Just one look at ‘Blue’ promos and you can’t stop but wonder what’s wrong with Sanju Baba!

Even Sanjay, who recently saw a few rushes of the film, realized that he isn’t looking his fittest and hottest best. According to a unit hand, after seeing a few rushes of ‘Blue’, Sanjay was impressed by everyone’s look except his. Interestingly, Sanjay who has donned different looks in his movies didn’t get any opportunity to experiment in this water adventure film.

And with the handsome Akshay and Zayed sharing the screen space, Sanjay couldn’t just wait and have his audience criticise him! Sanjay has suggested some changes in his look but with the shooting complete, only the DI technology (digital intermediate) can help Sanjay get that killer look.

A source informs that DI is a post production process through which some changes can be made to make Sanjay look smarter. But, needless to say, the whole process will cost a lot.

When contacted, director Anthony D’Souza denied the news terming it a rumor, “That’s not true. None of my actors have seen the film. Changing Sanjay’s look is not technically possible. We are yet to finish editing.”

So what if Salman Khan is ‘most Wanted’ after the success of ‘Wanted’, the film’s director Prabhu Dheva, too, is on seventh heaven, what with critics having given him his due, and box office records raking in the much wanted moolah. But Prabhu insists that the credit ought to be shared by all. “My actors – Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia, Mahesh Manjrekar, Prakash Raj… everyone did their jobs brilliantly. Producer Boney Kapoor didn’t leave any stone unturned; all the technicians behind the scenes, who made this plausible, a big thank you to them too,” says the humble Dheva, who is as happy as a clam.

So with the success of his Pokhiri re-make is it time to shift base to Bollywood? “Boney Kapoor thought I was able and gave me my first Hindi venture to direct. I’m glad it did well and gave him enough to smile about. I have a line-up of projects down South, but it’ll be fun to come and visit Bollywood now and then… as and when something interesting comes up,” said the director, actor.

Of course, Prabhu has moved on… “But shooting for ‘Wanted’ is an experience that’s going to remain with me,” he shares. And just what did he and Salman converse about? “I made Salman dance. He never thought he could do it, he still doesn’t believe that he did it… I told him he just had to. And he on the other hand suggested that I need to look tougher than I do, so next time I do an action flick, he has said that he’ll train me for it. So I’m going to become a macho man like him,” laughs Prabhu Devaa.

So while his career graph is sweeping upwards, love is in the air, too. Talks have it that South sensation Nayantara and he are quite an item. “No, that’s not true. There’s nothing like that… I don’t want to talk about it,” says the director, who is glad just basking in Wanted’s glory for the time being.

Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (born Aishwarya Rai, and sometimes known simply as Ash or Aish, Tulu: ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಾ ರೈ; 1 November 1973) is an Indian actress and former Miss World. Before starting her acting career, she worked as a model and gained fame after winning the Miss World title in 1994.

Often cited by the media as the most beautiful woman in the world, Rai made her movie debut in Mani Ratnam‘s Tamil film Iruvar (1997) and had her first commercial success in the Tamil movie Jeans (1998). She came to the attention of Bollywood in the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Her performance in the film won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. In 2002 she appeared in Bhansali’s next project, Devdas (2002), for which she won her second Best Actress Award at the Filmfare. After a low phase in her career during 2003-2005, she appeared in the blockbuster Dhoom 2 (2006), which turned out to be her biggest Bollywood commercial success. She later appeared in films like Guru (2007) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008), which were commercially successful and got her critical acclaim. Rai has thus established herself as one of the leading contemporary actresses in the Indian film industry.

During her career, Rai has acted in over forty movies in Hindi, English, Tamil and Bengali including the international productions Bride & Prejudice (2003), The Mistress of Spices (2005), The Last Legion (2007) and The Pink Panther 2 (2009) in English.

Early life

Rai was born in Mangalore to Krishnaraj Rai and Vrinda Rai. She has one elder brother, Aditya Rai, who is an engineer in the merchant navy and has also co-produced one of Rai’s movies, Dil Ka Rishta (2003). At an early age her parents moved to Mumbai where she attended the Arya Vidya Mandir high school in Santa Cruz. Rai then entered Jai Hind College at Churchgate for one year, and then moved to Ruparel College in Matunga to finish her HSC studies. She did well in school and planned to become an architect and went on pursuing studies in architecture. She can communicate in several languages, including her mother tongue Tulu, as well as Hindi, English, Marathi and Tamil. She started studying architecture but gave up her education to pursue a career in modelling.

Miss World

While pursuing her studies in architecture, Rai began modelling on the side. In the 1994 Miss India contest, she won the second place behind Sushmita Sen, and was crowned Miss India World. She went on to win the Miss World title the same year, where she also won the Miss Photogenic award. She abandoned her academic education after winning the pageant and spent one year reigning as Miss World in London. Rai then started working as a professional model and then moved on to her current profession as an actress.

Film career

Early career (1997-1998)

Rai made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam‘s Tamil biopic film, Iruvar (1997) with Mohanlal,The controversial film was a critical success and won many awards including Best Film award at the Belgrade International Film Festival, two National Film Awards, and two Filmfare Awards South. Rai appeared in dual roles, opposite veteran actor Mohanlal, with one of her roles being a cinematic depiction of political leader and ex-actress J. Jayalalithaa. Rai made her Bollywood debut in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya opposite Bobby Deol, which also released that year; the film did not do well at the box office, and was also panned by critics. However, her third project, S. Shankar‘s Tamil film, Jeans (1998) was a commercial success, earning her the Filmfare Best Actress Award South. The film was also noted for the song “Poovukkul“, written by Vairamuthu, and some reviews of the music video compared her to prominent world monuments.

Success (1999-2005)

In 1999 Rai starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. The film was centered around Rai’s character, Nandini, who is forced to marry Devgan’s character despite being in love with another man (Khan), and as her husband tries to get her to her previous love, she eventually falls for him. Rai’s portrayal won her critical acclaim, with a review on Rediff.com writing, “Aishwarya looks beautiful as usual… This film will most likely draw her accolades from all over, maybe even get her recognised as an actress the way Manisha Koirala did in Khamoshi. In many scenes, there is no trace of makeup and she looks very fresh”. The film also became her first box office success in Bollywood and earned her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for her. In the same year she appeared in Subhash Ghai‘s Taal, in which she played the role of a young village girl Mansi, who becomes a big Pop star after being hurt by her lover played by Akshay Khanna, the film was an average performer in India but was a big success among the international audience, especially in the United States, where it became the first Indian film to reach the top 20 on Variety’s box office list. Her performance in the film was praised with Rediff.com writing, “After being praised for her looks and acting talent in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Aishwarya has excelled in Taal. She looks etheral and unlike the former film, has a very sober and soft role. Though she looks pained and tragic in most of the film, she does a good job of a woman who is very protective of her father and one who doesn’t think twice before rejecting a lover who has insulted her father.” She received another Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare for her performance in the film.

In 2000, she appeared in Mansoor Khan‘s Josh alongside Shahrukh Khan and Chandrachur Singh, in which she played a Catholic girl named Shirley who falls in love with the sibling of her Brother’s enemy. The film was a commercial success. Later that year she appeared in Satish Kaushik‘s Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai opposite Anil Kapoor. It was a moderate success and her performance earned her a Filmfare Best Actress Award nomination. Later that year she played a supporting role in Aditya Chopra‘s Mohabbatein alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. The film was a major commercial success and became the second-highest grosser of the year, and it earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award nomination. Later that year, she starred in the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain, alongside Mammooty, Ajith Kumar and Tabu.

In 2002, Rai appeared alongside Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Devdas, an adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay‘s famous novel by the same name. She played the role of Paro (Parvati), the love interest of the protagonist, played by Khan. The film received a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. It became the highest-grossing film of the year in both India and overseas, earning a revenue of Rs 390 million domestically. Devdas won numerous awards, including 10 Filmfare Awards, and Rai received her second Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance. In 2003, she acted in Rituparno Ghosh‘s Bengali film Chokher Bali, an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore‘s novel by the same name. She portrayed the character of a young woman called Binodini, who is left to her own devices when her sickly husband dies soon after they are married.^[20] That year she also appeared in her home production Dil Ka Rishta alongside Arjun Rampal and Rohan Sippy‘s Kuch Na Kaho alongside Abhishek Bachchan, none of which succeeded.

In 2004 she appeared in Gurinder Chadha‘s Bollywood-style English adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Bride and Prejudice alongside Martin Henderson. In the film she portrayed the role of Lalita Bakshi, the film’s counterpart of Elizabeth Bennet in Austen’s novel. This was followed by Rajkumar Santoshi‘s Khakee alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan and Jayapradha, in the film she played a negative role for the first time in her career. In the same year she appeared in in her second film with Rituparno Ghosh, Raincoat alongside Ajay Devgan. The film was highly acclaimed by the critics, whereas Rai received rave reviews for her performance.

In 2005 she appeared in Shabd a film based on a love triangle alongside Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan. The film was a box office flop wheraeas it received average reviews from the critics. Her next release that year was Paul Mayeda Berges‘s The Mistress of Spices based upon the novel The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni in which she starred alongside Dylan McDermott. The film received negative review by critics and was also a commercial failure. The same year she made a special appearance in Shaad Ali‘s Bunty Aur Babli in a hugely popular seven-minute dance sequence for the song “Kajra Re“, alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.

Recent work (2006-present)

In the year 2006, Rai starred in J P Dutta‘s Umrao Jaan, a second film adaptation of the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada (1905), written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. She portrayed courtesan and poetess by the same name from 19th century Lucknow. The film was a critical and commercial failure, though Rai’s work was generally well received. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote, “Aishwarya Rai looks ethereal. She has looked heavenly and performed so convincingly. She emotes through her expressive eyes and the consistency in her performance is evident from start to end”. Later that year she appeared as a master thief, Sunheri, in Yash Raj Films‘s Dhoom 2 directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, with an ensemble cast of Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Uday Chopra. The film turned out to be a blockbuster and became the highest grossing film of the year in India, earning revenues of over Rs 770 million domestically. The film also sparked a controversy for a scene containing a kiss between her and Hrithik Roshan. However, Rai’s performance in the film received mostly negative reviews with a reviewer on Rediff.com writing, “Ash’s character too is all gloss and no depth. You seldom feel any tension in her behaviour and expressions as she accompanies the master thief on potentially dangerous missions. Sunehri enters the film nearly 50 minutes after its opening in a disguise. In no time, she is wearing the flimsiest of clothes. Once she opens her mouth — and she does it two minutes after appearing in the film — she spoils the image. There is no sensuality anymore, and half an hour later, one wonders what made the master thief fall for her.” Nonetheless, her performance earned her a sixth nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award.

In 2007 she appeared in Mani Ratnam‘s Guru as Sujata. Speculated to be based on the life of Indian businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, it was a rag to riches story about an ambitious small town man who ends up as the owner of the biggest corporation in India. The film was premièred at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, Canada, making it the first Indian film to have a mainstream international premiere in Canada. The film was critically acclaimed and performed well at the box office. Critical reception for Rai was mixed. While Nikhat Kazmi from The Times of India wrote that she is “just okay and fails to register the growth in her character”, Rediff.com‘s Raja Sen described it as “arguably her finest performance, visible especially when she takes over the film’s climax.” Rai got her seventh Filmfare nomination for Best Actress for the role. In the same year she starred in Jag Mundhra‘s British film Provoked as Kiranjit Ahluwalia (an NRI woman who killed her abusive husband after facing severe domestic violence) alongside Naveen Andrews. The film was panned by critics and was also a commercial failure, though Rai received positive reviews from critics. In the same year she appeared as a female Indian warrior from Kerala named Mira in Doug Lefler‘s epic film The Last Legion alongside Sir Ben Kingsley, Colin Firth and Thomas Sangster. The film was a critical failure.

In 2008, she starred alongside Hrithik Roshan in Ashutosh Gowariker‘s historical drama Jodhaa Akbar, a partly fictionalised account of the life of Muslim Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, played by Roshan and his Hindu wife Jodha Bai, played by Rai. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning revenues of over Rs 590 million domestically. Rai’s performance in the film was praised by critics, with Rajeev Masand writing, “Aishwarya Rai is wonderfully restrained and uses her eyes expertly to communicate so much, making this one of her finest outings on screen”.^[32] She earned her eighth nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare for her performance. Later that year she co-starred with husband Abhishek Bachchan and father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan in Ram Gopal Verma‘s Sarkar Raj, a sequel to his previous film Sarkar. She played the CEO of a major power company proposing to establish a new power plant in rural Maharashtra.

In 2009 she appeared in Harald Zwart‘s spy comedy film The Pink Panther 2 playing the role of criminology expert, Sonia Solandres. Like its predecessor, the sequel received negative reviews from critics and did a moderate business of $75,871,032 worldwide.As of August 2009, she is slated to appear with Rajinikanth in the Tamil movie Endhiran, directed by S. Shankar,^[34] with Vikram in Mani Ratnam‘s next film, Ashokavanam which is also to be simultaneously made in Hindi, titled Raavan, with Abhishek Bachchan in the lead. She will also appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Guzaarish opposite Hrithik Roshan, Vipul Shah‘s Action Replay opposite Akshay Kumar, Abhinay Deo’s next film produced by Farhan Akhtar and Vishal Bharadwaj‘s next directorial venture.

In 2009 Rai was awarded the Padma Shri for her contributions to Indian cinema.^[38] In the same year she refused to accept the second-highest Order Of France, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as her father was suffering from serious illness, and she wanted her whole family to attend the award function. She is only the fourth Indian actor after Amitabh Bachchan, Nandita Das and Shahrukh Khan to be chosen for an Order Of France. In June 2009, she was declared the Female Star of The Decade at the tenth International Indian Film Academy Awards held in Macau.

Other work

In 1999 Rai participated in a world tour called the Magnificent Five along with Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Akshaye Khanna and Twinkle Khanna. In 2003 she became the first Indian actress to be a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival.Rai is the brand ambassador for The Eye Bank Association of India’s nationwide campaign to promote eye donation in India.

In 2004 she travelled to Siachen Glacier, which at a height of 13000 ft is the highest battlefield in the world, to boost the morale of the jawans for a special New Year episode on the NDTV show, Jai Jawan. In 2005, she became a brand ambassador for Pulse Polio, a campaign established by the Government of India in 1994 to eradicate Polio in India.

In February 2005, Rai performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert to help raise money for the victims of 2004 tsunami earthquake in company with other Bollywood stars.  In 2008 she along with her family laid the foundation of a special school for underprivilged girls in the Daulatpur village in Uttar Pradesh.The school will be made by her family and is going to be named after her.

She appeared along with various other Bollywood actors at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

In Summer 2008, Rai joined her husband and father-in-law along with Preity Zinta and Ritesh Deshmukh on the Unforgettable World Tour. The first leg of the tour covered the USA, Canada, London, and Trinidad. The second leg of the tour will most likely happen by the end of this year 2008. Amitabh’s company AB Corp Ltd. along with Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd are behind the concert.

Personal life

In 1999 Aishwarya began dating Bollywood actors Salman Khan, their relationship was often reported in the media until the couple separated in 2001. Rai cited “abuse (verbal, physical and emotional), infidelity and indignity” on part of Khan as a reason for ending their relation, though Khan has denied this. She was later linked to actor Vivek Oberoi but the relationship was never confirmed by her.

Rai is married to actor Abhishek Bachchan. After much speculation concerning their relationship, their engagement was announced on January 14, 2007. The announcement was later confirmed by his father Amitabh Bachchan. The couple got married on April 20, 2007 according to traditional Hindu rites of the South Indian Bunt community, to which she belongs. Token North Indian and Bengali ceremonies were also performed. The wedding took place in a private ceremony at the Bachchan residence Prateeksha in Juhu, Mumbai. Though the wedding was a private affair intended for the Bachchan and Rai families and friends, the involvement of the media turned it into a national extravaganza. They have been cited as a supercouple in the Indian media. Rai has been very close to her family and used to live with them in Bandra, Mumbai until her marriage.

International media

Rai has been the most popular face of Indian cinema globally. In 2004 she was chosen by Time magazine as one of the World’s “100 Most Influential People”, and appeared on the cover of Time magazine, Asia Edition in 2003. In October 2004 a wax figure of Rai was put on display in London‘s Madame Tussaud’s wax museum.  She was the 6th Indian and the second Bollywood personality after her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan to get this honour.

She was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on 2 January 2005, which said that “at least according to thousands of Web sites, Internet polls and even Julia Roberts”, she was “The World’s Most Beautiful Woman”. In that same year she became a global brand ambassador of L’Oreal alongside Andie Macdowell, Eva Longoria and Penelope Cruz. The same year, a special Tulip in the Netherlands was named “Aishwarya Rai” after her. Rai became the first Indian to appear on such shows as Late Show with David Letterman, and was the first Bollywood personality to appear on Oprah’s “Women Across the Globe” segment. In 2005, Harpers and Queen‘s list of 10 Most beautiful women in the world ranked her at the 9th spot.  In 2009 she made an appearance on Martha Stewart‘s show Martha. Hrithik Roshan

Allu Aravind who delivered the biggest hit of 2008, Ghajini, is apparently planning his second Hindi project already. This time he wants to remake his own Telugu blockbuster Magadheera for which he plans to rope in none other than Hrithik Roshan. A little birdie tells me that the filmmaker is planning to approach Roshan and ask him to portray the role played by Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Teja in the Telugu original.

Now, Allu Aravind’s Magadheera happens to be the costliest Telugu movie ever made with a budget of over Rs 40 crores. Being the first high budget film to be made in the Telugu film industry, Magadheera was released in almost 1200 screens across 14 countries on July 31, 2009. And that’s not all. The movie had collected a sum of Rs 22 crores during its first week run and had a total collection of Rs 47.08 crores.

Will the film do as well in its Hindi version? Will Hrithik be able to pull off an Aamir? Well we can only wait and watch!

Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan (Hindi: ऋतिक रोशन [ˈrɪtɪk ˈroːʃən]; born January 10, 1974)  is an Indian actor working in Bollywood. After having appeared in films as a child actor in the 1980s, Roshan made his film debut in a leading role in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000). The film was a major success, and Roshan’s performance earned him Filmfare Awards for Best Actor and Best Male Debut. He has been noted for his performances in films like Koi… Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008) which are also his biggest commercial successes so far, and for which he won numerous Best Actor awards.

In 2008, Roshan received his first international award at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival in Kazan, Russia for his performance in Jodhaa Akbar. Roshan has thus established himself as one of the leading actors of India.

Early career, until 1999

Roshan’s first movie role was as a child artist when he was six years old in the 1980 movie Aasha, where he appeared in a dance sequence as an extra. Roshan went on to play minor roles in Aap Ke Deewane (1980) and Bhagwan Dada (1986) both of which starred his father in the leading role. He then became an assistant director assisting in the production of his father’s films Karan Arjun (1995) and Koyla (1997).

Breakthrough, 2000–2002

In 2000, Roshan made his film debut as the leading man in the film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai opposite another debutante actress Amisha Patel. The film, which was directed by his father and saw him playing a double role, proved to be very successful at the box office, becoming the highest grossing film of 2000 and winner of the Filmfare Best Movie Award. Roshan’s performance was well-received, and the film made him an overnight star. He eventually received both the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award and the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the role. The film entered the Limca Book of Records in 2003 for the most number of awards won by a Bollywood film – 102 awards.

Later that year, Roshan starred in Khalid Mohammed‘s Fiza. Although the film did poorly at the box office, his performance was praised, earning him another nomination for Best Actor at the Filmfare ceremony. Taran Adarsh from indiaFM noted, “The mainstay of the film is undoubtedly Hrithik Roshan. His body language, his diction, his expressions, his overall persona deserves great praise. With this film, Hrithik proves that there is more to him than just being a fashionable rage, a Mills & Boon lover-boy and a sex symbol. His talent comes to the fore in several scenes, especially those with Karisma. All said and done, the show belongs to Hrithik, who saves Fiza to a major extent. A brilliant performance undoubtedly!”

Roshan’s last release of the year, Mission Kashmir, became the third highest grossing film of the year. His performance was once again acclaimed with one critic praising him, “Hrithik once again cuts a splendid performance as a youngster sucked in the vortex of terrorism. He is portrayed as anti-government in the early part of the film– a bold role to play for even a seasoned actor, leave alone a budding superstar.” All these achievements promoted him as one of the biggest stars in the industry.

Subhash Ghai‘s Yaadein was his first release in 2001. This was followed by Karan Johar‘s melodramatic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which did extremely well at the box office, becoming the second-highest grossing film of 2001 and the biggest hit overseas.Roshan’s performance was well received and his performance earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at various award ceremonies.

Roshan had an unsuccessful year in 2002 when all three of his releases – Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage – failed to make an impact the box office and were declared flops.

Success, 2003 to present

In 2003, he made a comeback with the science-fiction film Koi… Mil Gaya, which saw him playing a mentally disabled young man.The film was the highest grosser of the year and won him many awards, including his second Filmfare Best Actor Award and his first Filmfare Best Actor (Critics) Award. Taran Adarsh noted, “Hrithik Roshan dominates the show and packs in a power-packed performance. The role of a mentally challenged person is no cakewalk, but the actor takes to it like a fish takes to water. He manages to pull off the zero to hero routine exceptionally well. As an actor, he scales dizzier heights with this splendid performance.”

Farhan Akhtar‘s Lakshya was Roshan’s only release in 2004; the film did not do well at the box office.  However, his performance was praised by critics.

Roshan took a two-year break from acting before resurfacing with the superhero film Krrish, a sequel to his 2003 film Koi… Mil Gaya which released in June 2006. The film was a major box office success and one of the highest grossers of 2006. His performance as a superhero was praised, earning him many Best Actor awards at various award ceremonies, including Star Screen and the International Indian Film Academy. IndiaFM wrote, “To state that Hrithik is the soul of Krrish would be an understatement. If the actor walked away with all noteworthy awards in Koi… Mil Gaya, it’s going to be an encore with Krrish. You cannot imagine any other actor enacting the role of a gifted child with aplomb. If his mask and robe look is splendid, watch his make up, gait and mannerisms as the aged father and you had agree, he’s one of the finest talents on the Indian screen today. Krrish is yet another ground-breaking film in his dazzling repertoire!”

His next film that year was Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 Dhoom. Featured opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Roshan’s performance in the movie not only earned him widespread critical acclaim, but also his third Filmfare Best Actor Award. The film went on to become the highest grossing film of 2006, as well as one of the most successful films of Bollywood.

In 2008, Roshan featured in Ashutosh Gowariker‘s Jodhaa Akbar opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. He played the historical role of Akbar the Great. The movie did very good business, both in India and abroad. His performance in the movie was widely appreciated by critics,  earning him his fourth Filmfare Best Actor Award as well as his first international award for Best Actor at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival in Kazan, Russia.

Roshan recently appeared in Zoya Akhtar‘s Luck by Chance (2009), in which he made a special appearance. He is currently filming for Anurag Basu’s Kites along with Mexican actress Bárbara Mori and Kangna Ranaut, and has recently signed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s film titled as Guzarish opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Personal life

Roshan was born in Mumbai, into a Punjabi Hindu family of cinema personalities. His father, film director Rakesh Roshan, is the son of music director Roshan, while his mother, Pinky, is the daughter of producer and director J. Om Prakash. His uncle Rajesh Roshan is a famous music director.

As a child, Roshan attended the Bombay Scottish School.  He later attended Sydenham College, where he did his B.Com.

Roshan is married to Suzanne Khan, the daughter of Sanjay Khan. The couple have two sons, Hrehaan, born in 2006 and Hridaan born in 2008.

had won the title of ‘Best Dancer’ as more Indiatimes Movies surfers voted for the industry’s darling chocolate boy. Out of the 40 comments that we received, 22 readers voted for Shahid while 18 voted for Hrithik. Those behind Shahid’s close win said he was far more versatile than Hrithik when it comes to dancing, and thus he is better.

When we met Shahid Kapoor recently as asked the handsome actor as to who does he think is better. “Hrithik Roshan is one of the best dancers in the industry. I am a huge fan of his dancing. Whenever I watch him dance, I get scared. He is damn good at it,” was the initial reaction of Shahid.

On learning that Indiatimes Movies readers felt otherwise, Shahid said, “Hrithik and I have our own style of dancing. Unfortunately, I was to be launched after two years and that too in a movie full of newcomers. I liked Hrithik even then and I like him now too.”

Reason No 2: Prabhu Dheva is a noted choreographer and he has made Salman do some serious dancing in ‘Wanted’. Reason No 4: ‘Wanted’, is choreographer-turned-director Prabhu Dheva’s Bollywood debut as a director. The film is a remake of the 2006 Telugu film Pokiri, directed by Puri Jagannadh. Adapted from a hit film, produced by Boney Kapoor, directed by Prabhu Dheva and starring Salman Khan in the lead, Wanted is sure to rock the box office.

It’s a tad difficult to fit ‘Sholay’ into a single paragraph. Arguably the most complete and entertaining film of all times, the film boasts of some of the biggest stars of its time-Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri. It also made a star out of a character called Gabbar Singh -the most imitated character of Hindi cinema. The legendary Gabbar’s dialogues are now folk-lore ( Pachas pachas kos door gaon mein jab bachcha raat ko rota hai to maa kahti hai beta soja ..soja nahin to Gabbar Singh aa jaayega ) peppered with his quirky vicious laughter showing his tobacco-stained teeth or the trademark ferocity ( Yeh haath mujhe de de Thakur ), Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh is a true blue cult-figure. Each and every character of Sholay is a part of the cinematic folklore, but apart from Gabbar the other most popular characters are Hindi cinema’s best-known buddies, Jai- Veeru and Veeru’s blabbermouth love interest, Basanti. The two friends singing ‘ Yeh dosti hum nahin chhodenge’ makes the most enduring image of screen friendship. Hema Malini as the chatterbox Basanti was a laugh riot. The three share some of the most memorable scenes in the film. Sholay is a classic to be watched again and again.

09. Deewaar (1975)

Yash Chopra’s ‘Deewaar’ is a classic example of a perfect Indian melodrama of the 70s –two brothers raised by a long suffering mother. One turns out to be good and the other gets strayed into the big bad world of crime. Amitabh had already made a mark with ‘Zanjeer’ as the ‘angry young man’ and with ‘Deewaar’ he enforced his image emerging as a force to reckon with. The potent dialogues written by the hit duo of Salim-Javed left a huge impact on the audiences receiving whistles and claps by the front-benchers. Who hasn’t heard “ Aaj mere paas bangla hai, gaadi hai, bank balance hai. Tumhare paas kya hai? Mere paas … Maaa Hai ”! Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor play brothers and Nirupa Roy their mother. In the climax when Amitabh is shot by his own brother to drive home the good-over-bad philosophy, he staggers into a temple where he dies in the arms of his mother. It was one of the most powerful scenes in the film. Though the entire cast including Shashi Kapoor, Nirupa Roy, Parveen Babi and Neetu Singh did a good job but the film belonged to Amitabh Bachchan who made ‘Deewaar’ a fare to remember with his powerhouse performance.

08. Arth (1982)

One of the best films coming from the filmmaker Mahesh Bhat, ‘Arth’ was known to be based on his relationship with the late actress Parveen Babi. The film had two of the best actresses of Hindi cinema, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil pitted against each other resulting in some super-volatile performances. The soulful songs rendered by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh were truly beautiful. The film is about the complexities of an extra-marital relationship from the points of view of the husband (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), the wife (Shabana Azmi) and the mistress (Smita Patil). Shabana excelled in the role of a wronged wife and gave the character a certain dignity hitherto absent in such roles despite the scene when in a drunken state she calls her husband’s mistress a whore publicly. But Smita walked away with the accolades as a guilt ridden, insecure ‘other woman’ and her final scene with Shabana when in a hallucination she picks up the imaginary mangalsutra beads of Shabana shakes you up completely.

07. Jane Bhi Do Yaaron

You just can’t not watch this film and then once you have watched it you can’t stop talking about it. One of the most brilliant satires coming out of Hindi cinema, ‘Jane Bhi Do Yaaron’ has some of the brightest actors of Hindi cinema. The film is about two simple and honest photographer friends, Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Vaswani. By chance they witness a murder and are dragged into the corrupt real estate deals with politicians and bureaucrats. Actors like Pankaj Kapoor, Om Puri, Satish Shah and Satish Kaushik shared some incredibly funny scenes in the film. Like Sholay people remember the outrageously funny dialogues of the film. Naseeruddin Shah’s “Thoda khao, thoda phenko”, Om Puri’s “Oye DMello, Tu to gaya” are some of the most memorable lines from the film. Some of the funniest scenes include a drunk Om Puri trying to help Satish Shah’s dead body start his ‘car’ (coffin) and the famous Ramlila scene are side-splitting.

06. Mr. India (1987)

Shekhar Kapoor’s ‘Mr. India’ had all the ingredients required for the superhit status that it acquired. A superhero like protagonist, great plot, Sridevi at her sexiest best, catchy songs and Hindi cinema’s most adorable villain, ‘Mogambo’. Anil Kapoor as the guy who had the power to go invisible was just awesome in the film. Amrish Puri’s menacing act as Mogambo was not just a turning point in his career but also the most memorable comic-book-villain-acts in Hindi cinema. The audiences were thrilled every time Amrish Puri glared down at them with his fiercely bulbous eyes sporting an atrocious blond wig and garish knee high silver heeled boots. They came back again and again to hear him mouth possibly the most repeated line of Hindi cinema (post 80s), ‘Mogambo khush hua’. Children loved the film for its special effects and the kiddie brigade taking on the villain. The grown ups couldn’t get enough of Sridevi in one of the most erotic ‘wet saree’ (blue clingy chiffon) songs ever in Hindi films, ‘ Kaate Nahin kat te’.

05.Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)

Aamir Khan’s debut film, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ made him an instant heartthrob. ‘QSQT’ is one of the landmark films of Hindi cinema. It was a welcome break from the violent 70s and 80s with all and sundry doing their ‘angry young man’ act. Even the original ‘angry young man’ was no longer angry. ‘QSQT’ was a simple youthful love story with a fresh look at doomed romance. It is about a star-crossed young couple from traditional feuding families a la ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The young lovers elope and are chased by their parents. When they find no hope for their love they decide to die and make their love immortal. The film was a blockbuster making Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla household names.

04. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

The film that may soon make an entry into the Guinness Book Of World Records, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ has run in Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir for 500 weeks. It completed 500 weeks on May 13 and will complete 10 years in October 2005. The film has won ten Filmfare awards – a record for a Hindi film. A complete entertainer, ‘DDLJ’ was a sweet love story in an NRI backdrop. Directed by Yash Chopra’s eldest son, Aditya Chopra in 1995 at the age of 23, it was a trendsetter of sorts with the lead couple being second generation Indians living in England with deep Indian values. The music of the film was superhit and so were the ‘great Indian wedding’ preparation scenes portrayed in the film. Shah Rukh – Kajol chemistry crackled on screen and they achieved the numero uno spot in Bollywood post ‘DDLJ’.

03. Satya (1998)

’Satya’ spawned numerous gangster flicks but it remains one of the best in its genre. The film was about the genesis of a criminal from an innocent man called Satya. Another character that made a star out of a ‘nobody’, Bhiku Mhatre was a no-frills-no-nonsense role portrayed brilliantly by Manoj Bajpai. The dreaded gangster Bhikubhai is not your regular formula baddie. He is a trigger-happy underworld don who doesn’t need a ‘get-up’ to look the part. Despite being a sadist he evokes sympathy and has a great sense of humour. Manoj Bajpai’s intensity was almost reminiscent of a certain ‘angry young man’ of yore. Bhiku Mhatre floored the audiences as an attitude ‘bhai’ with killer statements like, “Mumbai ka raja kaun? Bhiku Mhatre!”

02. Lagaan (2001)

’Lagaan’ was the most volatile combo of the two things that makes Indians tick- cricket and Bollywood. The result no doubt was exhilarating. The film was three hours long, but it passed in front of you in a jiffy, each ball being cheered, each shot being egged on. It’s a complete entertainer with songs that became instant hits. The film is a period drama set in the 19th century British-ruled India. Set in a small village called Champaner it tells the story of the simple village-folk struggling to pay off the annual debts (Lagaan) to the British. It had all the trappings of a blockbuster; Aamir Khan, great songs, humour, good-over evil storyline and to top it all, cricket. ‘Lagaan’ went on to be nominated as one of the five entries at the Oscars, the only film after ‘Mother India’ and ‘Salaam Bombay’. It won eight Filmfare awards in all the major categories.

“I haven’t given any statement whatsoever around the man who would eventually be playing the role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan that was made iconic by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. All I have said is that yes, we are going ahead with a remake of Agneepath and that’s about it”, announces Karan Johar.

Whether it is Hrithik, Abhishek or someone else, Karan must be having a wish list though, isn’t it? “Well, the wish list is to get the screenplay right”, laughs Karan, “For the moment nothing else is more important than that.”

Even though the film is coming under the banner of Dharma Productions, Karan won’t be coming behind the camera for the film. “True, I would be stepping aside and the film would be directed by Karan Malhotra who has assisted me on My Name Is Khan. That’s the only thing which has been finalized; rest everything that you hear is mere speculation. We would finalize the cast once the script is locked. Currently, it is still in the process of being written.”

Karan Malhotra is not really a novice when it comes to filmmaking. An erstwhile assistant director, he has also worked with Ashutosh Gowariker (Jodhaa Akbar), Farah Khan (Main Hoon Naa), Farhan Akhtar (Lakshya) and Raj Kumar Santoshi (Lajja, Pukar) amongst others.

Since it is close to two decades since the release of Agneepath (1990), would the remake have a different milieu to it? “Certainly”, comes a response from Karan, “We are adapting the film from the original but ours would be a new age version that would fit in well with today’s time. We really hope that we are able to do justice to the original and make the remake exciting for today’s generation.”

Meanwhile, at last count there are as many as seven films from the house of Dharma Productions that are in different stages of production. This includes My Name Is Khan, Wake Up Sid, Qurbaan, Koochie Koochie Hota Hai, remake of Stepmom, remake of Agneepath and I Hate Love Stories. How is he managing it all?

“Believe me; it’s not difficult at all. All of you have to do is follow a three point ‘mantra’ – ‘Delegation’, ‘Outsourcing’ and ‘Trust’. Along with that, if you have the right vision and infrastructure in place, which we do have in Dharma Productions, it isn’t difficult to crack it all. That’s the way you manage things and I have been fortunate enough to have a team with which it has become possible to helm number of projects at the same time”, explains Karan.

Interestingly, she has appeared on his show twice.First, she came with boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor to promote their film, Bachna Ae Haseeno and more recently, she came with Farah Khan and gelled quite well with Salman.But Deepika is not interested in talking about Katrina.Not long ago, it was reported that she didn’t approve of beau Ranbir and Kat’s growing friendship on the sets of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.Reports are rife that Deepika is responsible for the duo being no longer on talking terms.

But she claims she and Ranbir “trust each other” and are going great guns. The lady says, “Such gossip used to pinch me a lot earlier, but not anymore.” On the work front, after the box office dud Chandni Chowk To China, Deepika is once again teaming up with Akshay for a comedy, Housefull, which is being directed by Sajid Khan.Plus, she is also busy with Farhan Akhtar-starrer Kartik Calling Kartik.

Abhishek Bachchan & Aishwarya Rai

The shooting of Aishwarya Rai-Abhishek Bachchan starrer flick Raavana’, which was scheduled to start near Malshej Ghat area from August 27, is in trouble after the forest officials filed cases against fourteen people of the unit of the film. Sources say that the officials have filed cases against these people under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980 and the Indian Forest Act, 1927 for constructing sets for the film shoot without proper permission. They have also confiscated one JCB and a tractor involved in the construction work and slapped a fine. Now, director Mani Rathnam will be allowed to shoot on the site only after he gets proper permission from the authorities and pays the fine imposed on the unit members.

Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and others were expected to shoot here for almost a fortnight, but now everything has become uncertain.Sources say that Mani Rathnam was very impressed with the look of the Malsej ghat area and had decided to shoot some portions of his upcoming flick ‘Raavana’ here. The place looks ideal for showing ancient surroundings as is needed in Mani Rathnam’s ‘Raavana’, which is said to be a modern take on that great epic. From the very beginning, the shooting of Abhishek-Aishwarya starrer mega -budget flick ‘Raavana’ has been in trouble and this has caused delay in the completion of the flick. Earlier, it was Mani Rathnam who was taken ill and had to be hospitalized due to some heart trouble, resulting in the delay of the flick.

Recently, an elephant on the set of the film had gone mad and killed its owner during the shooting of an important sequence near Athirapally waterfalls in Kerala with Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. The whole unit was scared and the star couple could escape somehow unhurt from the ordeal.However, all this has delayed the project and its cost has already spiraled to around Rs 90 crore, which is a very huge amount to recover in these recession hit times from the box office. Mani is worried about this, and hence wants to complete the project as soon as possible. Keeping this in mind, director Mani Rathnam  just completed some important sequences with Govinda, who is playing the character based on Hanuman in Ramayana.

The ace director forced the lazy star to shoot with him at 3.30am for thirteen consecutive days to satisfactorily complete the shoot.Sources from the set of the film say that Govinda would be so exhausted after the shoot that he would go for massage everyday after completing his shots. ‘Raavana’ is being made in Tamil and Hindi simultaneously. Abhishek Bachchan plays the role of Raavana in the Hindi version, while in Tamil version Vikram enacts the same role. Aishwarya is in the character of Sita, while Govinda is Hanuman. Ravi Kissen and Sonu Sood also play important roles in the flick.

Presently, Akki is shooting in London for Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Housefull’ and in spite of the busy schedule, he makes sure that he finds out some time for Aarav to teach him rollerblade. Says a source from the unit, “Though Akshay has been shooting very hard from morning to night on the London schedule he still is finding time for Aarav and teaching him how to rollerblade. Every day, he makes it a point to keep aside an hour everyday to play Aarav’s roller blade trainer.”

And what thrilled papa Akshay the most is to see Aarav’s balance and control. For safety measure, he has brought all the safety equipments like the best quality helmets, wrist guards, elbow pads and kneepads to protect his kness, elbows, wrist if in case Aarav falls down.

Akshay Kumar ( Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, September 9, 1967 ) is an Indian film actor. He has appeared in over 80 Hindi films.

During the 90s, Kumar was primarily described as the action hero of Bollywood, starring in hit action films such as Khiladi (1992), Mohra (1994) and Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), and being particularly known for his “Khiladi Series”. However, he was also recognised for his performances in romantic films like Yeh Dillagi (1994) and Dhadkan (2000) as well as dramatic films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001).

In 2002, he won his first Filmfare Award in the Best Villain category, for his performance in Ajnabee (2001). Willing to change his intransigent image, Kumar later ventured mostly into comedy films. His comic performances in films such as Hera Pheri (2000), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Jaan-E-Mann (2006) met with critical acclaim. His success further rose in 2007, when he starred in four consecutive commercial hits. Having done so, he has established himself as one of the prominent actors of the Hindi film industry.  In 2008, the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Law on Kumar in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Early life

Kumar was born in Amritsar (Punjab) to a Punjabi family. His father was a government worker. From a very young age, he was recognised as a performer, particularly as a dancer. Kumar was raised in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk neighbourhood before moving to Mumbai. In Mumbai, he lived in Koliwada, which was another Punjabi dominated area. He studied at Don Bosco School and then Khalsa College, where he took an interest in sports.

He studied martial arts in Bangkok and worked as a chef. He then came back to Mumbai, where he started teaching martial arts. One of his students happened to be a photographer and recommended him to do modelling. The student gave him a modelling assignment for a small company. For his two hours posing in front of the camera, he got Rs. 5,000, compared to his previous salary of Rs. 4,000 in one month. That was one of the main reasons why he chose to be a model. After a couple of months of modelling, Kumar was finally offered a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar.

Career

Kumar made his Bollywood acting debut with the 1991 film Saugandh, which was unnoticed. His first major success was the 1992 thriller film Khiladi. 1993 saw a drop as many of his films failed to do well. However, 1994 proved to be a good year for Kumar as he followed up his success with Khiladi with the action films Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Mohra which were among the highest grossing films of the year. Later that year, Yash Chopra signed him for the romantic film Yeh Dillagi which was also a success. He received appreciation for his performance in this film, where he played a romantic role which was different compared to his action roles. He would consequently receive his first nominations for Best Actor award at the Filmfare and Star Screen ceremonies. During the same year, Kumar also had success with films like Suhaag and the low budget action film Elaan. All these achievements, promoted Kumar as one of the most successful actors of that year.

In 1995, along with his share of unsuccessful movies, he starred in the third film in his Khiladi series Sabse Bada Khiladi, which was a hit. He proved to have success with the Khiladi series, as in the next year he starred in the fourth successful film with Khiladi in the title, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi opposite Rekha and Raveena Tandon. The film became one of the highest grossing films of the year.

In 1997, he made an extended guest appearance in Yash Chopra‘s hit film Dil To Pagal Hai, for which he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination. In the same year, he attempted a comedy role with the fifth film in the Khiladi series, Mr and Mrs Khiladi. Unlike his previous films with Khiladi in the title, the film failed commercially. In the same way as this film, his next Khiladi releases in the following years went on to fail at the box office. In 1999, Kumar received critical acclaim for his roles in the films Sangharsh and Jaanwar. Whilst the former did not make a profit at the box office, the latter turned out to be a success.

In 2000 he starred in the comedy Hera Pheri (2000) which was both a critical and commercial success, and showcased his ability at doing comedy just as he did action and romantic roles. He also starred in the romantic film Dhadkan later that same year which also earned reasonable takings at the box office. In 2001, Kumar played a negative role in the film Ajnabee. The film won him much acclaim as well as his first Filmfare Award for Best Villain. Kumar also had critical appreciation for his role as a blind man in Aankhen which was a box office success of that year.

Following the success of Hera Pheri, Kumar starred in a number of comedy films, including Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and Garam Masala (2005). The films succeeded at the box office, and his performance in the latter earned him his second Filmfare Award, for Best Comedian.

Apart from his action, comedy and romantic roles, Kumar displayed a flair for dramatic roles in films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001), Aankhen (2002), Bewafaa (2005) and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005).

In 2006 he starred in a sequel to Hera Pheri titled Phir Hera Pheri. As was the former, the sequel became a huge success at the box office. Later that year he starred alongside Salman Khan in the romantic musical Jaan-E-Mann. The film was a well anticipated release, and despite receiving positive reviews from critics, did not do as well as expected at the box office.^[16] Though the film under-performed, his role as a shy, lovable nerd was praised. He ended the year with the comedy Bhagam Bhag, which was a success. In that same year, he led the Heat 2006 world tour along with fellow stars Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Celina Jaitley.

2007 proved to be Kumar’s most successful year during his career in the industry, and as described by box office analysts, “probably the best ever recorded by an actor, with four outright hits and no flops.” His first release, Namastey London, was critically and commercially successful, and his performance earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Filmfare. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote of his performance in the film, “he’s sure to win the hearts of millions of moviegoers with a terrific portrayal in this film.” His next two releases, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, were box office successes as well. Kumar’s last release of the year, Welcome, did extremely well at the box office, receiving a blockbuster status and simultaneously becoming his fifth successive hit.^[22] All of Kumar’s films which released that year did well in the overseas market as well.

Kumar’s first film of 2008, Tashan, marked his comeback to the Yash Raj Films banner after 11 years. Although much anticipated by the public, the film was a critical and commercial failure. His second film, Singh Is Kinng was a huge success at the box office and broke the first-week worldwide record of Om Shanti Om, the previous highest figure. His next film was the animated film Jumbo.

In 2009, Kumar featured opposite Deepika Padukone in the Warner Bros.-Rohan Sippy production Chandni Chowk to China. Directed by Nikhil Advani, the film was a critical and commercial failure to box office.

Personal life

During his years in Bollywood, Kumar was romantically linked with several of his co-star actresses like Pooja Batra, Raveena Tandon, and Shilpa Shetty. After being engaged twice to actress Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of veteran actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, he finally married her on January 14, 2001. Their son named Aarav was born on September 15, 2002.

In 2007, a leading Mumbai tabloid newspaper printed a story saying that Kumar and his wife had fallen out and Kumar had moved out of his home, staying at a hotel instead. On July 26, 2007 the couple sent a legal notice to the tabloid, declaring that the rumour was false. Kumar said:

An FIR was registered by the Vakola Police on April 2009 against Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna under Setion 294 of the Indian Penal Code for an act during the Lakme Fashion Week in which Twinkle unbuttoned the jeans of Akshay.

Bollywood’s own bad boy may well have reputation and a tendency to stir up controversies, but when it comes to pay packets, he certainly rakes in the big money. He is known to charge about 8-10 crores per movie, and even though his acting skills (and his accent) have always been debatable, he does deliver hits and has a huge fan following.

Tadaa! His rise to the top has certainly been one to chart. Silently but slowly overtaking the Khan brigade, Akki has consistently delivered hits. He has proven to be the king of mindless comedies and producers rush to him for any comic role. He takes home a whopping 15 crores per movie, the highest ever paid to a Bollywood actor.
